NATO Advanced Research Workshop
Magneto-Optical Imaging
28-30 August 2003
Øystese, Norway

Over the last decade the experimental abilities to directly visualize the static and dynamical magnetic behavior of materials have advanced enormously. To a large extent this is due to the progress in magneto-optical imaging based on the extreme Faraday effect in certain ferrite garnet films. The aim of the Workshop is to gather for the first time the researchers using magneto-optical imaging as a tool to characterize superconductors and magnetic materials. Both new scientific results and progress in methodology will be discussed.

Scope:
  • Magneto-optical imaging of superconductors
  • Magneto-optical imaging of magnetic materials
  • Indicator films for magneto-optical imaging

Proceedings

Proceedings of the Workshop are published by Kluwer:

Workshop Format

Invited talks: 25 min + 5 min for questions, contributed talks: 15 min + 5 min for questions.

There will be a beamer (LCD projector) and an overhead projector available. You may either bring your laptop computer, or bring a CD and borrow a laptop from the Organizing Committee (with Microsoft Windows and Powerpoint), or bring conventional foils (transparencies).

The poster boards are 88 cm wide, 118 cm high. All posters will be mounted during two poster sessions on the 28th and 29th. Three best posters will be awarded.

Buses from Bergen to Hardangerfjord Hotel in Øystese

We have ordered 2 special buses on Wednesday 27th, and their schedule is as follows:
Bus #1 departs from Bergen airport (Flesland) at 16:15, (it waits for flight KL1189 even if slightly delayed).
Bus #2 departs from Bergen airport at 22:30, (it waits for flight SK864).

Both buses will go to the hotel via Bergen city, to pick up participants arriving by train or boat, or if they came by plane and chose to see some of the city rather than wait at the airport. In the city, both buses will stop outside the main entrance of the Railway Station. To get to the exact spot, turn LEFT when you go OUT of the entrance, and walk some 20 meters, see the Bergen map.
Bus #1 departs from the Railway Station at 16:45
Bus #2 departs from the Railway Station at 22:50
The buses are recognized by their blue color, the name of the company "Turistbuss Bergen", and a logo representing the Workshop.

If you prefer to take public bus to Øystese, take either bus 925 or bus 181. They depart from Bergen center (bus station called "Bystasjonen") at 7.30, 9.30, 11.30, 13.30, 14.30, 15.30, 16.30, 17.30, 19.30 and 21.30. The bus costs approximately 15 EUR, and the trip takes 1h40m. You should use exit 4 from the bus station.

More travel information

Travel via Oslo
You might find it more convenient to fly to Oslo, and then come to Bergen by train. Information about Oslo-Bergen trains can be found at www.nsb.no, where you can also book tickets. The journey takes approximately 7 hours, the departure times from Oslo are 6.11, 8.11, 10.43, 16.11 and 23.11. One way ticket costs approx. 80 EUR. You may also combine this trip with enjoying beautiful scenery of Norway on a boat trip along the Sognefjord and the breathtaking Flåm railway, if you buy Norway in a Nutshell tour. The journey will then take 14 hours.

Visa

Norway is a schengen state. Nationals from the countries not included in this list need a visa to enter Norway. The application form in Word format is available online.

Registration Fee

There is only a small fee to finance local transportation and social events around 500 NOK (approx. 60 EUR) for every participant and adult accompanying person. If you bring an accompanying person and you together occupy one double room, the additional cost is 790 NOK per night with all meals included. If lunch is skipped the price becomes 545 NOK.

Glacier Tour

One of the excursions is a visit to the Folgefonna glacier, where qualified guides and a magnificant scenery will hopefully make this a memorable event. For the memory to be positive (and not the opposite), it is essential to wear proper clothing. What is actually proper will depend on your choise of activity once we get (by bus) to the foot of the glacier. If the weather is fine we will be given 2 options;

1) if you are happy just to WATCH the beauty of the blue ice, inhale the impressions of being close to this wild thing and even touch it, your clothing is not so important. If you feel cold, you can always escape into the cafeteria there, where a glacier expert is going to give a lecture for us.

2) Those who want to WALK on the glacier (with professional guide) have to take on warm underwear plus an outer layer of windtight clothes. (applies actually to all who want to stay outdoor most of the time) Bring also a cap (ears covered) or ear muffs for the head, and warm socks for the feet. For the glacier walking, the shoes must have ankle support, e.g., as on mountain hiking shoes (standard jogging shoes are not sufficient). The guides will provide such strong shoes, but they do not have enough for all of us. Therefore, those of you who already have proper shoes should bring them along. All other equipment (metal spikes for the shoes, ropes, walking sticks etc.) will be provided on the site.

The tour will start at 12.00 on Saturday the 30th.
